The Survey of the Role of English Literature in the formation of Child Rights with Special Emphasis on Harper Lee and Charles Dickens’ Works

Abstract

This research deals with the analysis of the English novels of Harper lee’s to Kill a Mocking Bird and Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist and their impact on child rights.The research has deployed inferential-analytical approach. First, child and his conditons as one of the major characteristics of the two novels was analyzed and then via the frame work of child right convention, the formation of the convention and the influence of such literary endeavours on child conditions were analyzed. Alongside the analysis of the personal and intellectual view points, the scope of the research was confined to the fictional elements of characteriztion and setting. The analyses revealed that in Harper Lee the child as the narrator presents the adults’ problems with which she will be afflicted with in the future and in Oliver Twist, child and his conditons are the major leading theme of the novel indicating that the two writers have highlighted the child rights’ obsessions in the literary and scientific circles. The paper reveals the contribution of the two writers in intiating the social and humanitarian movements and the formation of child rights convention
